The members of the Manufacturers Alliance/MAPI Human Resources Council were recently surveyed to obtain broad, comprehensive benchmarking information about the corporate human resources (HR) function. Peer data was sought on HR functions' operational structure, responsibilities, staffing, and budgets to provide indicators to senior HR executives as to whether their departments are optimally positioned to perform all of their varied responsibilities in the most effective and cost-efficient manner. This report presents the results of that survey, covering replies to more than 75 questions. The operating structure of a majority of the respondents' HR functions is a hybrid, combining elements of a centralized and decentralized approach. Also, a plurality of respondents project their 2012 budget to be about the same relative to the 2011 budget, and almost as many expect their 2012 budget to be higher. A majority expect their department's headcount will remain the same in 2012 relative to 2011.
