The Manufacturers Alliance for Productivity and Innovation, or MAPI, is a member organization that provides an educational forum for industry executives to foster efficiency, innovation and overall business success within their companies.  MAPI contributes to the competitiveness of U.S. manufacturing by providing unbiased economic research, professional development, and an independent, expert source of manufacturing information.

What is MAPI?

MAPI is a member organization focused on building strong leadership within U.S. manufacturing, and driving the growth, profitability and stature of U.S. manufacturers.

  • MAPI’s 25 councils (each aligned around a corporate function such as finance, HR, or operations) focus on the sharing of best practices, to enable career development in all aspects of manufacturing organizations.
  • Each MAPI council convenes bi-annually to focus on networking, idea generation and exploration of key issues of the day impacting member and industry effectiveness.
  • MAPI offers an array of reports that provide original economic research, regulatory analysis and industry surveys about our members’ most pressing concerns.
  •  MAPI provides critical data to allied manufacturing associations that promotes growth in U.S. and global manufacturing.
  • Why is MAPI Important?

Because manufacturing in the global economy has become so competitive, it is critical for business executives to have access to timely and unbiased information and resources that ultimately generate greater operating efficiencies, productivity and innovative thinking.

Moreover, it is important for America’s leaders to understand the essential role manufacturing plays in the nation’s economic growth.

  • Manufacturing generates more economic activity than any other business sector in the country. Every $1 in sales from U.S. manufacturers contributes $1.40 in output in the rest of the economy.
  • U.S. manufacturing employs nearly 12 million workers directly and almost 7 million in support services.  Average compensation is $33 an hour, including total wages and benefits, 14 percent higher than the private sector average.  Manufacturers spend $234 billion annually on research and development (R&D)—more than double the total federal R&D spending (data as of 6/11).
  • MAPI develops proprietary research, such as the Industrial Outlook series, that shows the impact different factors—technology, policy, and expanding international markets—have on the U.S. economy and within individual industry sectors.
  • MAPI routinely surveys industry leaders and sectors to generate performance analysis, as well as updates on trends, issues, benchmarks, and best practices, all supporting improved member performance.

  • How is MAPI Making an Impact?

For more than 75 years, MAPI has supported leaders in making critical economic, organizational, and policy decisions that affect the vitality of U.S. manufacturing. MAPI is committed to increasing productivity and innovation through the development of quality research and education.

  • MAPI’s quarterly Economic Outlook is a highly valuable forecast that assists business leaders in guiding current decisions while concurrently developing future strategies.
  • MAPI publishes a comprehensive and robust series of insightful, cutting edge research addressing hot top issues of crucial importance to the manufacturing community. Authors include Ph.D.-level economists, attorneys and widely respected business analysts.
  • Surveys help members identify best practices and benchmark themselves against an audience of peers on issues as broad as SG&A costs, social media best practices, and sales forecasting.
  • Regular peer-to-peer member networking sessions connecting members to one another.
  • MAPI’’s modern approach to dissemination of information utilizes multiple communications platforms to retain member engagement throughout the year and between meetings, including webinars, list serves, blogs and video, among others.  MAPI’s rapid response model to member inquiries is a core competency.
